The Chicago Tao Teh Ching & Taoism Study Group is dedicated to exploring the Tao, literally "The Way", through the Teachings attributed to Lao Tzu, espoused so eloquently in the 2500 year-old classic text, Tao Teh Ching.
This collection of 81 short poems has become the basis of one of the world's great religions. Since its origins in ancient China, The Tao Teh Ching has been translated more frequently than any other text in history besides the Bible. In English alone, there must be dozens of various translations - no two the same. And unless you are a scholar of Ancient Chinese and can read the original, every student of the Tao has a favorite translation. Because of the philosophical nature of the Tao, translating the Ancient Chinese into modern Western languages is more of an art than a science and the various translations can be widely different.
This study group will be focused on comparing various English translations of the Tao Teh Ching. By going over and discussing the various translations in a group setting, we will be getting to the heart of the matter and reinforcing the simplicity, humbleness, insight, and oneness with nature embraced by this Eastern classic.
